The top quark, also known as the t quark, is the heaviest known elementary particle. Discovered in 1995 at Fermilab's Tevatron Collider, it has a mass of approximately 172.76 GeV/c^2 (gigaelectronvolts per speed of light squared). 

The top quark's extraordinary mass places it at the forefront of the quark family and makes it more than 35,000 times more massive than the up quark, the lightest quark flavor. Its massive nature grants the top quark unique properties and characteristics.

3. Bottom Quark: The Partner in Heaviness

Complementing the top quark, the bottom quark, or b quark, is the second heaviest quark. It was discovered in 1977 independently by two research groups, one at Fermilab and the other at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. 

The bottom quark has a mass of approximately 4.18 GeV/c^2, making it about four times heavier than the charm quark. While significantly lighter than the top quark, the bottom quark's mass places it in a distinct realm of quark flavors.

4. Top and Bottom Quarks in Particle Interactions

The exceptional masses of top and bottom quarks allow them to play significant roles in particle interactions and decay processes.

 Due to their high masses, the top and bottom quarks predominantly participate in the strong and electroweak interactions. They are essential in processes involving the Higgs boson, the W and Z bosons, and other particles. Additionally, the top quark's large mass grants it a short lifetime, causing it to decay almost immediately before it can form bound states.

The study of bottom quarks and B mesons provides valuable insights into processes involving heavy quarks, including CP violation, the phenomenon responsible for the asymmetry between matter and antimatter in the universe.
